Keep the main thing, the main thing

I once had a wise man tell me to "stay focused on the main thing" when I was growing a business years ago. I thought then he didn't understand the plight of small business owners (he inherited from his father a large compressed air/gas supply company that has since been purchased by AirGas) who needed to generate money NOW and dismissed his advice. I learned the hard way that his counsel was top notch.

We're all looking for that moment of great clarity as we grow our business. If fact, we strive to find that clarity often by adding new "things to do", telling ourselves, "If I could only finish 'this' (insert your own task here), then business would flourish!" What happens though, is we're concentrating on the tasks and not the future of the business. We fail to "keep the main thing, the main thing". In other words, we become so wrapped up in completing tasks we don't actually get anything done that generates money for our businesses, TODAY.

So, how can you "keep the main thing, the main thing"? Ask yourself this: what can I start AND finish this week that will positively generate revenue within the next 3-months?
